PLADES
OVERVIEW OF PLADES
PLADES, developed by Sargent & LundyLLC,
is an integrated project management, engineering and design automation
system for all aspects of power plant design, analysis, optimization and 3D modelling.
This system builds accuracy and completeness of information into the engineering deliverables
and generates superior analysis for project management, preliminary design, system engineering
and physical design.
The mechanical, electrical, civil, instrumentation and the project management groups share
information through a common database built on Oracle on Windows NT. Intelligent drawing
files are generated through the different modules built on Microstation - the CAD engine for PLADES.
The following is a brief listing of the various engineering and design modules that are used:
Mechanical Engineering & Design
Computer Aided Design for Mechanical Engineers (CADME)
CADME is the basic tool for mechanical system design. Used for development of piping and
instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) and bring together essential line and pipe component
information by posting to the plant information database.

Piping Design Work Bench (PDWB)
As the primary tool for the layout and routing of all power piping, PDWB is used to generate piping
system design as well as for input to piping analysis. It is used to create all piping drawing

Pipe Stress Analysis (PIPSYS)
PIPSYS is a linear, three-dimensional finite element analysis with menu-driven interactive modules
to pre- and post-process data for the analysis and stress evaluation of a piping system.
The program consists of:
- Interactive modules to generate, review and modify piping data
- Modules to perform static and dynamic analysis
- Modules to evaluate piping stress and to determine loading for supports
Deliverables:
- Echo print of the input
- For each analysis, member end forces in local and /or global co-ordinates, displacements,
reactions at supports, accelerations
- For the stress evaluations, a summary table listing the stress for each equation evaluated.
A detailed equation can be requested for each case.
- For each support, a table listing the reactions at the support and displacements in the
unrestrained directions
- Plots of the geometric configuration and plots of the dynamic response versus time can be
produced.
Plant Data Information System (PDIS)
PDIS is a project management tool that allows users to enter as well as retrieve data entered
in the Plant Information Database through the various PLADES modules. Various engineering device
and document related reports can be produced by using PDIS.
Deliverables:
- Commodity transfers to cost estimating
- Drawing transmittal letters

- Valve report
- Vendor drawing report
- Vendor drawing status report
- Instrument data sheets
Electrical Engineering & Design
Electrical Design Work Bench (EDWB)
EDWB is used for the physical design and routing of electrical raceways. It provides input
to the 3D plant model.
Deliverables:
- Cable tray layout (for 3D model)
- Electrical underground layout (for 3D model)
- Embedded conduit layout (for 3D model)

INTELASYS
INTELASYS is built upon Visio2000 with Oracle at the back end to produce intelligent Master
Schematic Diagrams (MSDs) that combine cable block diagram, schematic, and wiring termination
details. The Master Schematic Diagrams and resulting downstream deliverables are intended not
only for design but also for installation, testing and operation.
Deliverables:
- Key diagrams
- Master schematic drawings

Civil/Structural Engineering & Design
Connection Design Work Bench (CDWB)
CDWB is used for generating the joint details for structural members. The joint may involve members
of column, beam and bracings. This is integrated with Frameworks from Intergraph.
Deliverables:
- Connection design detail drawings
The civil/Structural engineer uses third party software like SAFE, SAP & STAAD for structural
analysis and design. InRoads, Frameworks, Model Draft, PARCH are the other applications that
are used and in some cases integrated with the Plant Information Database.
Instrumentation & Controls Engineering & Design
The Instrumentation & Controls engineering department uses the CADME and the PDIS modules of
PLADES to interact with the central database.
Design Interfaces
Computer Aided Design Database System (CADDS)
PLADES modules generate intelligent Microstation ‘dgn’ files. All the data attributes
assigned remain in the ‘dgn’ file itself. CADDS is a consolidation which transfers
data / attributes to the central database.
Computer Aided Design Model Server (CADMS)
CADMS provides the facilities for defining plant models, managing the interference checking
process and producing composite drawings. It also furnishes a number of configuration management
reports. This software allows the user to transfer drawings to a common drawing database
(3D Models in the form of dgn files) residing at one of the workstations. Other project
engineers can attach these drawings as reference files. CADMS is integrated with third party
Plant Space Enterprise Navigator (from Bentley) for interference management.
Deliverables:
- Background files
- Interference results
- Generation of composite drawings
Plant Space Enterprise Navigator
The Plant Space Enterprise Navigator is used for viewing the interference and walkthrough of
the Plant model. CADMS is integrated with the software.
PLADES is continually improved and upgraded. It is integrated with different third party software
for better management of all aspects of design engineering.
